What Is a Backflow Preventer?

A backflow prevention device prevents water contamination and pollution by preventing water from inside your property from backing up through your plumbing system. When pressure levels change, backflow preventers close off your water supply, preventing water from moving backward and spreading this potential contamination. 

By law, all businesses and commercial properties are required to have a backflow preventer, and likewise each is required to have this preventer tested every year to ensure protection is still in place and operating properly. A test must be carried out by a licensed plumber who can report the results to your local enforcement agency. Should any problems arise, you will typically have a limited period of rectify them and retest your backflow preventer.
